After pickup from a central Windermere location, travel to Bowness-on-Windermere by minibus for your sightseeing cruise.
Step onto your comfortable boat, and enjoy the idyllic scenery as you cruise across Lake Windermere, England’s biggest lake. Take photos from the deck, and then step ashore at Waterhead, on the lake’s northern shores.
Rejoin your minibus and travel through the undulating countryside to Hill Top, the home Beatrix Potter bought in 1905 using monies earned from her debut children’s book, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit.' Having fallen in love with the Lake District, Beatrix spent much of her life here, gleaning inspiration from the landscapes and villages for her stories.
Wander around the pretty cottage garden, home to an allotment like those featured in many of Beatrix’s tales, and browse the charming gift shop. If you wish, head inside the 17th-century house to explore the rooms, left pretty much as they were in Beatrix’s day. View her writing desk, furnishings, and personal effects, and learn about her daily life here.
Next, continue to Hawkshead, a lovely village famous for its whitewashed cottages and cobbled lanes. Learn how English poet William Wordsworth was schooled here between 1779 and 1787, and glimpse the old grammar schoolhouse he attended.
Drive on to Tarn Hows, one of the area’s best-loved beauty spots. Here, drink in the gorgeous views of the lake against a backcloth of rugged peaks.
Afterward, ride back to Windermere where your tour ends.
Please note: Hill Top is closed on Fridays.

Be prepared for a roller coaster ride in the coach when you travel to Hill Top! It’s really secluded. But once you’re there it’s a beautiful little place and left much as Beatrix Potter left it. Well worth the trek.
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thank you Andy for your kind review! We are glad to hear about your great time exploring the Lake District, in particular area's affiliated with Beatrix Potter. Hill top really is a beautiful place so we are glad that you also thought the same! Thank you for choosing Mountain Goat and we hope to welcome you on another tour in the near future.

Beatrix Potter Hiltop house was CLOSED. the very reason for the tour and it was closed. There were many people on the trip that came to Windermere just to see the house. Why would you book a tour and the feature is closed??
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thank you for your review. We are very sorry to hear that you weren't satisfied with your experience on our Beatrix Potter tour. On our website and online travel agents we do state multiple times that due to Hill Top's opening hours, we will be consequently visiting The World Of Beatrix Potter instead every Friday. We are sorry that you may not have seen this message and consequently ended up disappointed by the alternative. We can only give our sincere apologies and if you would like to further this comment we would love a personal conversation over email: tours@mountain-goat.com or phone: 01539445161. Thank you, the Mountain Goat team.

We had the most wonderful Beatrix Potter Tour with Tim! From start to finish, he was friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the Lake District and Beatrix Potter’s world. His commentary brought each place to life — from the charming villages to the beautiful landscapes that inspired her stories.
Tim made sure everyone felt comfortable and never rushed, and he added so many personal touches and insights that made the day feel extra special. The lake cruise was stunning and such a peaceful way to take in the scenery.
It was truly one of the highlights of our trip — thank you, Tim, for a magical and memorable day in the Lakes! 🌿🐇✨

We had the best time! The cruise on Windermere was beautiful. We went in October, so it was chilly but fun. The tour of the house and surrounding area was amazing. I loved that you could tour the home and spend some time in each room. Mr. McGregor's garden was big and so beautiful.

Oh I loved this tour so much! Our tour operator, Stef, was kind and thoughtful, and even recited a poem to us.. and he knew so much about Beatrix Potter, and was even able to show us scenes from the books that were near Hill Top Farm. He made a couple of stops for us to take photos and filled us in on the geology, and agricultural of the area , including information on Sheep raising! Just a great tour!

The small number of people on the tour is a plus and the small bus makes a lot of the country roads and scenery more accessible. A knowledgeable driver and the right amount of time at each stop. An enjoyable day.

Donna_D, Jul 2025
The tour description did not match what we did on the tour. The tour did not mention you spend the first hour in a Beatrix Potter children’s museum, like Disneyland’s small world. Further, the tour promises entry into Beatrix Potter’s house with a walk around her rooms. The tour description does not say on Fridays the house is closed and all you can do is a drive by the gate and garage. We didn’t even get to go inside the gate to see what the outside of the house looked like. It was raining torrents, so we were unable to view most of the countryside promised. Most, but not all shops were open, and we were so wet, it was unenjoyable. The tour guide did his best. Very disappointed! Especially that we were not notified that the Beatrix Potter house is closed on Friday and we wouldn’t be able to get in. What a waste of money!! False advertisement!! Buyer beware!
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Dear Donna_D,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations, and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify and respond.
We completely understand your disappointment about not being able to visit the home of Beatrix Potter, Hill Top. While this is noted in the tour description, we’ll take your comments on board and look at how we can make this information more prominent during the booking process and in our pre-tour communication.
That said, we would like to clarify that this is not a case of false advertising. The tour description on Viator, where you booked, clearly states:
"Entrance to Hill Top farm is included, however when Hill Top is closed, customers will visit The World of Beatrix Potter. (Hill Top is closed on Fridays outside UK school holidays and from November to February)."
We aim to be transparent and ensure all guests are well informed when planning their visit.
As for the time spent at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, we consider this to be a fitting and enjoyable alternative when Hill Top is closed, in keeping with the tour’s theme. We’re sorry to hear that it wasn’t what you expected.
We also understand that the heavy rain had a big impact on your enjoyment. Unfortunately, the weather is beyond our control, but we know it can make a difference to how a day unfolds. We're pleased to hear your guide did their best under the circumstances.
We're sorry that the tour did not feel like good value for you, and we truly appreciate your feedback, which helps us continue improving our service.
Best wishes,
Mountain Goat

Chloe_W, May 2025
This tour is heavily focused on Beatrix Potter. There is a ferry ride included and a personal bus driver with a small group which is great. You visit a church/castle however you cannot go into it and you can walk around only, personally felt this was a bit of a waste of time. You then go to Hilltop to visit the house of Beatrix which was really lovely to see. If you have a car you could do this yourself.
Response from Host, May 2025
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the Cruise , the small group experience, and your visit to Hill Top. Beatrix Potter’s legacy is a key focus of this tour, and we aim to offer a thoughtfully curated experience for those interested in her life and work.
We appreciate your comments regarding the church/castle stop. While access inside isn't possible due to preservation restrictions, we include it for its historical and scenic value. That said, your feedback is valuable and will help us in reviewing our itinerary for future guests.
Thank you again for joining us, and we hope you enjoyed your time in the Lake District!
Diane_K, May 2025
You are rushed through the visits especially Beatrice Potter. They need eliminate the Tarn view and spend more time at Hilltop
Response from Host, May 2025
Thanks for your feedback! We’re sorry you felt a bit rushed—Hill Top is definitely a highlight. Just a quick note: all visits there are on a set schedule, as timed entry is required. That said, we really appreciate your suggestion and will look into how we can make the overall timing feel more relaxed. Thanks again for sharing!
Susan_M, May 2025
The tour was excellent and the driver was kind, considerate, and very informative. His driving was so incredible on tiny roads. Cudos for driving. He was an excellent guide!
Response from Host, May 2025
Thank you for your lovely feedback! We're so glad to hear you enjoyed the tour and felt well looked after by your driver-guide. Navigating those narrow Lake District roads is no small feat, and it's wonderful to know you appreciated both the skill behind the wheel and the informative commentary. We'll be sure to pass on your kind words — they’ll mean a lot. We hope to see you again on another tour soon!

Enjoyed our guide, who gave us just enough info and history to make the story come alive, but not too much that we didn’t have some quiet time to think and talk to each other. The day was well organized, and was a lovely way to see more of this incredible area of the world.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Hello gail_f,
Thank you for your lovely feedback! We’re delighted that our guide’s storytelling added depth to your experience without taking away from those quiet moments to reflect and enjoy. We hope we can welcome you on another tour soon!
