Itineraries for Your Trip to Fez
2 Days in Fez for First Timers
As the first country I ever traveled to outside of Europe, Morocco holds a special place in my heart, and Fez is hands down one of its most captivating cities. Beyond the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Fez Medina with its much-photographed tanneries, it was Fez’s creative spark that won me over—the city is known for its traditional artisans and centuries-old handicrafts.
Two days in Fez provide plenty of time to explore the imperial city, wander through the labyrinthine souks, and experience a crafts workshop or cooking class. To make the most of your time, here’s what to do in Fez for first-time visitors.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the famous Chouara Tannery.
Skip the hot, humid summer months—the cooler weather of spring (March–May) and fall (October–November) is better for city sightseeing.
Most of the must-see attractions in Fez are located within its historic medina. Start with a walking tour that helps you navigate its narrow alleyways and sprawling souks. As the oldest of Morocco’s four imperial cities, Fez’s long history is reflected in its diversity of architectural styles—the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II, Bab Bou Jeloud, Kairaouine Mosque, and Al-Attarine Madrasa are all shining examples.
After getting a taste of Fez’s craftmaking heritage at the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts and marveling at the Chouara Tannery, it’s time to venture into the maze-like souks. For your first time in Fez, visit the souks with a local guide so that you can meet the artisans, peek inside their workshops, and get tips on identifying quality craftsmanship and haggling for the best price.
For a deep dive into Moroccan culture and cuisine, taking a cooking class is one of the best things to do in Fez for first timers. This evening, join your local chef at the market to purchase fresh ingredients and learn about Morocco’s fragrant herbs and spices, then get hands-on in the kitchen as you prepare a traditional tagine, a selection of typical appetizers, and a delicious Arabic dessert.
Continue your 2-day Fez itinerary with a history-focused tour that explores the western part of the medina, home to the Royal Palace of Fez, the Jewish Quarter (Mellah), and the landscaped Jnan Sbil Garden. Travel by car along the route of the old ramparts, which date back to the 9th century, and visit the hilltop Marinid Tombs and Borj Sud Fortress, both of which afford sweeping views over the medina below.
Set aside your afternoon for a creative activity that’s not only a fun way to put your artistic skills to the test, but also affords insight into one of Fez’s oldest and most renowned handicrafts: pottery making. Join a pottery workshop run by a local craftsperson and make your very own piece, which you can decorate using a mosaic of traditional Zellige tiles.
After a busy two days of sightseeing, take the time to relax and unwind like a local with a traditional Moroccan hammam experience in Fez. A classic spa package includes the time-honored ritual of a steam bath followed by an exfoliating body scrub using Beldi black soap, and finally, a moisturizing layer of Argan oil—silky soft skin is practically a guarantee.
