Itineraries for Your Trip to Niagara Falls
2 Days on the US Side of Niagara Falls For First Timers
When I lived in Buffalo, New York, nearby Niagara Falls was a favorite day-trip destination, especially when I had out-of-town visitors. As my home was just a short drive away, I didn’t often stay overnight, but on the rare occasions I did, it was nice to experience the falls’ natural beauty in peace, without the day-trippers. If you can stay for longer than the standard day trip, there’s certainly plenty to see and do over two days on the US side of Niagara Falls. As well as the sights and attractions at Niagara Falls, take a trip up the Niagara Scenic Parkway to experience the beauty of the Niagara Gorge, in any season.
While most visitors come here in summer for the warm weather, the falls are also dramatic in winter when parts freeze over.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a ride on the Maid of the Mist steamboat, which operates from around May to October.
Take a walk through Niagara Falls State Park and across to Goat Island and the Three Sisters Islands, either independently or on a guided walking tour. Niagara Falls comprises three separate falls on the Niagara River: Bridal Veil, American, and Horseshoe Falls. There are many great places to stop and admire fall views along the way, and from the US side, you get very close to the falls. Pack a picnic to eat in the park.
Once you’ve taken in the views from a safe distance, it’s time to get wet. The Maid of the Mist boat ride is a must-do Niagara Falls activity. Don the provided plastic poncho and brace yourself as you approach the foot of Horseshoe Falls, where millions of gallons of water thunder before you. The boat operates from around May to October, so check out the Cave of the Winds in other months.
If you need another reason to hang around in Niagara Falls in the evening, the fireworks displays held throughout much of the year are it. Between mid-May and mid-October, as well as late December and early January, there are nightly shows. At other times, you may see them on weekend nights, or you can settle for the magnificent views of Niagara Falls illuminated with colorful lights instead.
