Itineraries for Your Trip to Lille
3 Days in Lille for First Timers
Tucked away in France’s northern corner—just 8 miles (13 kilometers) from the Belgian border—Lille is all too easy to overlook. Many travelers know it simply as a stop on the Eurostar train, en route to buzzy capitals like Brussels, Paris, or Amsterdam. I, too, was one of those travelers—until I had a layover in Lille and discovered just how vibrant and cultural this city really is.
Boasting a border-hopping Franco-Flemish identity, Lille is home to a vibrant Old Town (Vieux Lille) and UNESCO–listed landmarks, plus stellar museums, lively markets, and well-established brewing traditions that evoke its northern neighbor. Three days in Lille is just the right time to see the highlights (plus discover nearby World War I landmarks). Here’s your perfect itinerary.
If you only have time for one thing, make it exploring Lille’s picturesque Old Town, including its central Grand Place.
Lille has a relatively rainy, temperate climate—come prepared for overcast skies.
With its handsome architecture and cobbled streets, Lille is best discovered on foot. Begin with an introductory walking tour to glimpse key landmarks: Admire the Old Stock Exchange (Vieille Bourse), Town Hall and UNESCO–listed Belfry (Hôtel de Ville et Beffroi), and the grand Lille Opera (Opéra de Lille), all while learning facts and stories you’d miss exploring solo.
After additional wandering and browsing—and a waffle snack—set out on a faster-paced tour as the sun starts to set. On a private excursion by vintage Citroën 2CV, you’ll widen your sightseeing radius and admire Lille as its lights come on.
After spending your first day getting to know Lille’s key sights and neighborhoods, dedicate your second day in town to all things cultural. Begin with a morning walking tour that will introduce you to some of the city’s tastiest and most traditional bites: From pastries and cheese to local specialities, you’ll enjoy a full culinary immersion.
Return to Lille and get ready to wrap up—and toast to—your trip. Thanks to its proximity to Belgium, Lille is considered France’s beer capital. Tour Lille's old town and taste the city's signature beers, waffles, and other bites.
Three days in town is enough time for a day trip—and Lille’s proximity to major WWI battle sites makes it a key stop for history buffs. On a day tour with transit included, head to moving landmarks like the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Lochnagar Crater, and other Somme battlefields.
