1 Day in Lake Garda for First Timers

Curated by Alex Badgera British travel writer, living in the Italian lake district.

Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) is a big lake, bordered by the culturally diverse regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino–Alto Adige, which attract different crowds. You can’t cover it all in just one day, so I’d suggest focusing on a lake town instead. Popular spots include Riva del Garda and Malcesine in the north, or Garda town and Bardolino to the east, but I prefer Sirmione the pretty peninsula town of the south.

When I’ve stayed on the quieter west coast near San Felice del Benaco, I’ve found there’s still plenty to do: sights, cruises, and restaurants. If you have just one day to explore Lake Garda and you like the idea of Sirmione, here’s how to maximize your time.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a visit to Jamaica Beach to swim, sunbathe, and enjoy the laid-back beach bar.

Skip the rainy April and May months, and visit in June to catch Lake Garda at its best.

Morning

Start with an espresso and brioche (the northern Italian take on a croissant), then stroll the streets and browse the shops of Sirmione old town. Afterward, board a speedboat to view Scaliger Castle (Castello Scaligero) and Grotte di Catullo from the water, with stops for swimming plus wine tasting in Bardolino. Later, climb the castle ramparts or stroll through Parco Callas to reach the archaeological park and explore the Roman ruins of a poet’s opulent villa.

Afternoon

There’s no shortage of lunch options in Sirmione old town, so wander around until you find one you like. Look for those advertising cucina tipica to enjoy local risotto dishes and grilled lake fish. After, walk off your food on a walking tour with a local guide, hearing the history of Scaliger Castle, St. Anne of the Rock Church, and Sirmione thermal baths from the outside. When the tour ends, head to Jamaica Beach to relax on its flat white rocks, lapped by the lake.

Night

After an aperitivo at Jamaica Beach, head toward the castle for another Lake Garda cruise, ideally timed in the cooler early evening hours. As the sun starts to dim over Lake Garda, enjoy prosecco or soft drinks as you go. The evening cruises don’t tend to be longer than an hour, so you’ll finish up just in time for dinner. Consider a Lake Garda winery as an alternative eatery—La Lugana Ristorante is part of the town’s Cà dei Frati winery.
